Sobota Leaves Lasting Marks In the Throws in Tennessee

Joshua Sobota of Bearden High will go into the history books as one of the best throwers in Tennessee history and he made his final mark on the state track and field championships over the weekend.

Sobota threw 65-1.75 to claim the Large Schools shot put title and went 191-2 to win the discus. His best marks of the weekend were slightly under his best of the season. Sobota is the all-time record holder in the discus.

In the Large Schools meet, Markeece Shufford of West Creek and Keegan Jones of Cleveland traded wins in the sprints. Shufford won the 100 meters in 10.49 seconds and Jones won the 200 in 21.10.

Kristin Jones of Whitehaven was a double winner, going 11.75 and 23.94 to claim the sprint titles.

Jake Renfree of Knoxville Catholic ran 4:12.70 to win the boys 1,600 meters.

Brothers Titus and Silas Winders of Henry County went 1-2 in the 3,200 meters, in 9:17.88 and 9:25.22.

Top hurdles times were recorded by Benjedi Casseus of Cleveland in the 110-meter highs (13.99) and Jordyn Braswell in the girls 100-meter hurdles (14.10).

Willington Wright of Hardin Valley Academy won the 400 meters in 47.77 seconds.

Breana Miles of Southwind led her team to a title with victories in the 400 (56.25) and 4x400 relay (3:49.70).

In the D2 small school championship, Brevin Sims of Arts and Sciences won the 110s in 13.89w and the 300s in 38.56.

In the AAA finals, Kethlin Campbell of Shelbyville Central won the girls 100 (11.73), 200 (24.21) and the long jump (20-3.25).

Rebecca Story of Christian Academy of Knoxville was a three-event winner in the Division II-A meet, with victories in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.  

Rashad Haynes of Memphis Central won the AAA decathlon with 6,477 points. Sophomore Jett Kinder of Brentwood scored 6,557 for the Large School title. Kiara Rhodes of Whitehaven won the girls pentathlon with 3,382 points and also doubled up with 14.10/43.94 in the hurdles.

Class AA – Brentwood Academy boys 187 points, Brentwood Academy girls 156 points

Class A -- Harding Academy boys 146 points, Harding Academy girls 153 points
